During its February 24 special City Council meeting, Hermosa Beach City Council voted to appoint former Mayor Pro Tem Michael Detoy to the position of mayor, and to name Councilmember Michael D. Keegan as mayor pro tem.
Fellow councilmembers and community and elected leaders also praised Councilmember Rob Saemann, who served as the City’s mayor for the previous term.
In remarks made after his election, Mayor Detoy thanked his family, spoke to his appreciation for outgoing Mayor Saemann’s “practical and purposeful” approach to governance and advocated for the importance of civil discourse in local politics. “It is truly one of the greatest honors of my life to serve on this Council and rotate into the role of mayor of Hermosa Beach again,” said Mayor Detoy. “As I take this gavel I want to make a simple plea: let’s recommit ourselves to civil discourse that brings our community together. Let us collectively refuse to normalize personal attacks as part of local politics. Let us focus on the policies and priorities that matter, without attacking the people who live next door.”
Newly elected Mayor Pro Tem Keegan also shared his appreciation for outgoing Mayor Saemann’s service. “Rob is really committed to the community and I appreciate his honesty and ability to run a meeting,” said Mayor Pro Tem Keegan. “He did a great job as our Mayor and served the community with distinction. I appreciate his 50-year tenure in this City, and it wouldn’t be the same without him. Thank you for living here, and serving for us.”
After passing the gavel to Mayor Detoy, former Mayor Saemann thanked his colleagues, City staff and wife for their support throughout his leadership tenure. “Nine months ago, when I was handed the gavel, it was a time of change. A time of new directions and adjustments for us all – and I hope that time is behind us,” said Councilmember Saemann. “I know with the leadership of Mayor Detoy and Mayor Pro Tem Keegan, we will start anew. Let’s put aside everything and work together for the benefit and the betterment of our wonderful town, Hermosa Beach. Congratulations, Mayor Detoy and Mayor Pro Tem Keegan: I wish you great success.”
Mayor and mayor pro tem terms for the City of Hermosa Beach are approximately 9.6 months long. Current terms end on December 8, 2026. Additional information on City Council terms, voting and election procedures can be found here.
