Community Invited to Celebrate Hermosa’s History & the 100-Year Legacy of Hermosa Beach Kiwanis

Post Date:12/30/2025 7:30 AM

The City of Hermosa Beach and the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club will partner to host a community celebration marking the re-unveiling of Hermosa’s Centennial Mural on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., at 11 Pier Avenue (in the Vista/Mermaid Parking Lot).

The event, which is free and open to the public, will mark the official re-unveiling of the City’s Centennial Mural and celebrate 100 years of the Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club providing services to the community. Seating is limited, and attendees are encouraged to arrive early.

Community leaders and involved individuals, including Hermosa Beach Mayor and Kiwanis President Rob Saemann, Kiwanis Club Lieutenant Governor and event producer Rick Koenig and event co-producer Chris Miller, will deliver remarks. Attendees are also encouraged to look to the skies for a potential surprise during the ceremony.

“It’s a special day when we get to celebrate both the rededication of our Centennial Mural and the Hermosa Kiwanis Club’s century of service,” said Mayor Saemann. “As both the Mayor of Hermosa and President of our Kiwanis Club, I’m especially proud to see Hermosa’s residents and Kiwanis members come together to celebrate their respective beginnings. Our City has always been deeply connected to Kiwanis, and we remain united in our shared goal of improving Hermosa Beach for today’s residents and future generations.”

The Centennial Mural, the City’s first mural which was unveiled in September 2007, is a vibrant visual narrative that celebrates Hermosa Beach’s rich history and gradual evolution, depicting the city’s main thoroughfare, Pier Avenue, in the 1920s and featuring images of businesses and passing Red Cars that once lined the street. Its design incorporates 100 unique elements that represent key moments, places and symbols from the City’s first century.

“For more than a century, Hermosa Beach has been shaped not only by our beautiful coastline, but by the people who care deeply about this community,” said Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor and event producer Rick Koenig. “This Mural represents decades of work by community partners, volunteers and donors. Its renewal is a fitting way to celebrate 118 years of Hermosa’s history and a century of Kiwanis Club service, while reaffirming our shared commitment to preserving Hermosa’s history for years to come.”

The Hermosa Beach Kiwanis Club, founded in 1926, has played an important role in supporting youth, education and community programs throughout the City for a century – raising millions of dollars and providing hundreds of thousands of community service hours for worthy local causes.
