Post Date:07/22/2025 12:00 PM

The City of Hermosa Beach announced today it is partnering with the Hermosa Garden Club to host a ceremony unveiling a new Blue Star Memorial Marker in honor of all who have served and continue to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The unveiling ceremony will take place at Hermosa Beach’s Greenwood Park (1102 Pacific Coast Hwy, Hermosa Beach, California 90254) on Monday, July 28, at 11:00 a.m. and will include a presentation of colors by the Hermosa Beach Police Color Guard, remarks from Hermosa Beach’s Mayor and community leaders and the formal unveiling of the marker. All members of the community are invited to attend, and refreshments will be served following the ceremony.

“Hermosa Beach’s new Blue Star Memorial Marker is more than a symbol; it’s a lasting tribute to the courage and commitment of all who have worn and continue to wear our nation’s uniform,” said Hermosa Beach Mayor Rob Saemann. “We hope that this marker serves as a daily reminder of the freedoms we enjoy and the brave individuals who protect them.”

The Blue Star Memorial program, originally established in 1945 to honor veterans of World War Two, is a nationwide initiative spearheaded by National Garden Clubs that today honors all military service members, both past and present, through dedicated highway markers, gardens and byways. The symbol was adopted after it became a popular icon to commemorate sons and daughters away at war during World War Two.

The installation of the Blue Star Memorial Marker was approved in July 2024 by the Hermosa Beach City Council and adopted through a formal resolution reflecting the City’s commitment to honoring military service members and their families. The ceremony will be presented in partnership with the Hermosa Garden Club, California Garden Clubs, Pacific Region Garden Clubs and the Kiwanis Club.
