Press Release | COVID-19 Concerns lead to cancellation of Hermosa Beach Summer Series and Movies at the Beach this Summer
Concert Promoters 5B Artists + Media and Movie Sponsors Plan to Be Back at the Beach Next Summer
HERMOSA BEACH, CA — COVID-19 concerns led to the cancellation of this year’s Hermosa Beach Summer Series and Movies at the Beach, but sponsors for both events said they plan to return next year.
Chris Hudson, the director of marketing and branding for 5B Artists + Media, which is the promoter of the Hermosa Beach Summer Series, said the serious health concerns related to bringing large groups of people together for performances, as well as the difficulties in booking acts and securing insurance during a pandemic, forced the cancellation of the 2020 Hermosa Beach Summer Series.
“We’ve been incredibly proud to host the Hermosa Beach Summer Series in our community and are disappointed that current circumstances will prevent us from providing music and fun at the beach this summer,” said Hudson. “We look forward to returning to the beach next summer with the high-level live music and other family friendly experiences that 5B Artists + Media provided to the community last summer.”
Laura Leventhal, President of Hermosa Beach Friends of the Parks (HBFOP), which hosts Movies at the Beach, said the organization is in full support of the decision to cancel the events this season, in light of the dynamic public health landscape resulting from COVID-19. She said that HBFOP is confident that they will be able to deliver a much stronger and safer community event down the road.
Leventhal also said Friends of the Parks is actively working through alternatives and ways they might be able to supplement the absence of Movies at the Beach as normally planned this year.
“We know how much the community has loved coming together outdoors for Movies at the Beach in the past, and we too love hosting this event year over year. We are looking forward to the next opportunity to welcome the community back to the beach for one of our favorite signature events.”
Hermosa Beach City Manager Suja Lowenthal thanked 5B Artists + Media and Friends of the Parks for hosting music and the Movies at the Beach in the past and said the City looks forward to their return next year.
“While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to enjoy concerts and music at the beach this summer, we recognize that the pandemic has made it impossible to safely and effectively host these events this year,” said Hermosa Beach City Manager Suja Lowenthal. “We know that these concerts and movies are valued community traditions, and we thank residents and our local businesses for their continued patience and understanding during the pandemic.”
The City is also closely monitoring updates and sharing COVID-19 information provided by trusted resources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The City is providing the latest information about coronavirus and links to resources on its website.
