Press Release | Hermosa Beach Mayor's Statement on Declaring June Hermosa Beach Pride Month
Mayor Honors LGBTQ+ Movement’s History, Celebrates City’s Inaugural Pride
Month and Looks Forward to Celebrating This Tradition for Years to Come
HERMOSA BEACH – June 1, 2020 – Following is a statement from Hermosa Beach Mayor Mary Campbell regarding the City declaring June Hermosa Beach Pride Month:
“As we raise Pride flags around the City and light Pier Plaza today to declare June Hermosa Beach’s inaugural Pride Month, we take this opportunity to recognize and honor our nation’s and City’s LGBTQ+ community. We also celebrate the individuals and events that helped make this possible by fostering the equality, diversity and inclusion that characterize Pride celebrations across the United States.
“This first Hermosa Beach Pride Month represents a time to reflect on the national LGBTQ+ community’s long and arduous road towards equality. It also affords us the chance to think about how we can all work together locally as Hermosa Beach residents to help make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our LGBTQ+ neighbors and their allies.
“This year marks the 51st Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City, an historic event involving LGBTQ+ Americans standing against prejudice and violence that helped catalyze the LGBTQ+ rights movement across the country. We must keep fighting, as a country and as a City, to preserve that legacy and ensure that our neighbors are treated equally under the eyes of the law.
“As we face the reality of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and acknowledge that events celebrating Pride this month must be held virtually this year, we take heart in knowing that the LGBTQ+ community has overcome far more significant obstacles in the past. We have no doubt that the LGBTQ+ community – and our community as a whole – will continue to meet this ongoing challenge together as we all celebrate Pride Month this June.
“We take great pride in celebrating Hermosa Beach’s first Pride Month, and we look forward to celebrating this tradition for years to come. We are proud of every LGBTQ+ community member and ally who calls Hermosa Beach home.”
